Welcome to VIC4943 - Multimedia Practicum
The objective of this course is to make disciplined, imaginative and expressive connections between the historical, critical, and technical aspects of digital media and culture.
This is a capstone course. As the pinnacle or culminating course in your undergraduate career, I would like you to be able to articulate your view of digital culture through the role or roles in which you participate in this culture (creator/producer, audience/consumer, gamer, commentor, part of a smart mob or Mechanical Turk, hacker, etc.), or specific aspects of the culture which you are interested in critically investigating, and with which you find particularly resonance. This articulation will be expressed as:
• An essay that defines your relationship to digital culture, in the critical language of your choice, (IDENTITY) plus, a translation of key points of that essay into voice-over for a 3-4 minute segment of a public domain film (SUBVERSION).

"Old Blue-Eyes", or "The Chairman of the Board",
and future Sinead O'Connor foe,
in The Man With The Golden Arm (1955)
Download it here.
• A web presence that personifies and amplifies your essay. The web presence will include your own domain, a home page with links to Flash and Web 2.0 content, your essay (in its text form and as an embedded video of the part of the voice-over film you made). It may be further written in the voice of a persona you create exclusively for this course. (IDENTITY)
• A set of three (3) reviews of media objects, most of which can be found on www.ubu.com or will be shown in class (HISTORY).

Thom Yorke of Radiohead in interactive music video,
House of Cards
• Participation in an ongoing media production, for the digital media experimental ensemble meme™ (SUBVERSION).
Your video wall (better streaming here), and also your video ball.
Applications: While we will integrate theory and practice in this course, we still need to use a number of apps to get our work done. We will be using Dreamweaver, Flash and (time permitting) Final Cut Pro, in this course. There will be review lectures on each of these application, but we will also explore more advanced features, and by the end of the course you should have an understanding of how these apps can be used to create an integrated digital media experience.
